SUMMARY:Topsham Museum Lectures: Mass Observation and Devon’s Wartime Diaries, 1937 to 1945
DESCRIPTION:Topsham Museum Lectures: Mass Observation and Devon’s Wartime Diaries, 1937 to 1945\nBy Dr Todd Gray\nTuesday 16th June, 7.30pm at Matthews Hall\nEntrance £6 payable at the door. Doors open at 7.00pm\nThousands of diaries recording everyday life across Britain during the Second World War are housed in the Mass Observation archive but those for Devon have not been used until now. This illustrated lecture examines some of the 100+ accounts which reveal ordinary life which was gradually overwhelmed by warfare.\nIn this lecture, Todd accesses the inner thoughts of Devonians in the lead up to, and during, the Second World War.  At times hilarious, and at other times sombre and thought-provoking, Todd’s many years of work in the archives has resulted in this highly entertaining and informative talk, and an accompanying book.\nDr Todd Gray is an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, and the author of numerous books on the history of Devon.  He was awarded an MBE for services to Devon’s history, and had the Freedom of the City of Exeter bestowed upon him in 2018.  Todd will have a selection of books available for sale on the night.\n
