Take in the Estuary
Sit at the quay and enjoy goodies from one of the town’s eateries, whilst watching the boats bobbing by.
Alternatively, if you have the experience and tidal knowledge, take out a paddleboard or kayak onto the water. Or are you a beginner? Need kit? Contact Topsham’s own Shaka Watersports for paddleboard lessons and hire.
Wander
Wander along the circular route from Fore Street, down to the Strand, along the famous Goat Walk, past the nature reserve and then back along Monmouth Street.
Listen
Listen to live music outside one of the local pubs or from buskers in town whilst enjoying a well-earned drink after a day of shopping and sightseeing.
Explore
Explore one of the best places in Devon for bird watching at Bowling Green Marsh
Learn
Visit Topsham Museum and learn about the town’s maritime heritage and fascinating architecture or enjoy a cream tea in their garden. See their website for opening times May to September.
Cycle
Bring your own bikes or hire them to cycle along the Exe Estuary Trail following the Exe through Lympstone and on to Exmouth and the sea.
Browse
Browse the three floors of Topsham Quay Antique Centre, the riverside warehouse on the quayside and pick up some interesting pieces for your home
Take a ferry
The beautiful little Regnum is one of two ferries ‘cross the estuary to the unique Turf Hotel. More details here for the ferry and here for the Turf. The ferry’s available for bird watching cruises too and private hire for those even-more-special occasions.
Your other option is the Topsham Ferry run by Exeter City Council and takes passengers from Ferry Road by the Passage House Inn across to the Lock Cottage. Then take in a pleasant amble either to Turf for a drink or right towards Countess Weir.
Shop
Shop at the many independent shops along Fore Street, The High Street and Strand. Stop for lunch or a coffee and if you’re here on a Saturday morning, make the most of Topsham’s Saturday Market at Matthews Hall. Don’t forget to pick up your Love Topsham card.
Swim
The town has its very own outdoor pool run by volunteers. It’s a treasure. See the website for opening times, adult only swimming and kids sessions with inflatables!
Eat
Eat at one of the many cafes, pubs or restaurants along Fore Street or overlooking the estuary.
Be Guided
Topsham Guided Walks are free, they’re fun and they’re every Wednesday, May to September, leaving at 2pm from Holman Way car park. There’s a maximum of six in each group for comfort and discussion – first come, first served!
Alternatively, pick up a Topsham Trail leaflet from outside Topsham Museum on the Strand and take a wander in your own time, following the easy to follow guide produced by the museum.
